The Stand by Stephen King, the unabridged version. God damn that was a long book, good though.

Shortest one was probably something in college for my Kid's Book Lit class.

If you liked 'The Stand' you'd probably also like Lucifer's Hammer. Similar end-of-the-world scenario but the agent of destruction is an asteroid.

It was written by a coalition of sci-fi authors so its pretty good on accuracy for the kinds of damage such an event would cause. Not sure I entirely agree with them on how societies would react though.
